In the past, this area was the heart of Santa Fe. North of the Plaza is the Palace of the Governors, the oldest public building in the country that has never been vacant.

Education
This part of the city is home to the Gonzales Elementary School. It is a public school taking in students from grades K-8 and has a student to teacher ratio of 14:1. This elementary school is centrally located and is considered the best in the locality, focusing on a robust child-centric education.
There are quite a few excellent elementary schools, such as the Carlos Gilbert Elementary School and the Wood-Gormley Elementary.
Other options include the Pojoaque Valley Public Schools and NM Schools for the Deaf in nearby districts.
However, for pursuing higher studies, one would need to travel down to the city to access the Santa Fe Public District.

Things to Do
Canyon Road, considered the heart of Santa Fe’s artistic culture, is usually the first and last stop for most tourists. But while the public galleries and museums there are in a league of their own, you must also stop by sites at the Plaza like the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and New Mexico’s original capital, the Palace of the Governors.
